I haven’t posted anything for a bit, but now I’m going to make up for it! Two weeks worth of outings in one post:) We’ve visited a cemetery that’s right behind our place, went to the beach/market, crossed the river on a ferry and went to visit Durham Cathedral! Rod had a three day weekend with NO HOMEWORK!!! this last weekend so we had a lot fun hanging out and relaxing. He passed all his midterms with great marks so we’re definitely here for the long haul!
Anyway, here are the pictures…
We spent the afternoon two Sunday’s ago walking through the cemetery, it was pretty cool looking at all the gravestones from way back in the 1800’s. So many of them have fallen over or been taken down for safety I think. I would definitely get the heebie-jeebies walking around in here at night! The figure lying on the ground was kinda beautiful, her face is half grown over with vines… creepy too:)
This Saturday we headed out to the coast again, and visited the market which I forgot to take pictures of, but I know for a fact many people I know would LOVE it! Vintage and old everything is there! Old box cameras that still work, jewelry, home decor, collectibles, whatever you can think of!
After the market we headed to the beach for a walk along the coast. It was pretty cold and windy so we didn’t stay long but it was still a super beautiful day.
This is different angle of the same castle we visited the first time. We haven’t gone inside yet but I’m definitely planning on going in at some point.
I’m pretty sure we found Mr. Beans car, but in red instead of yellow:) Rod is doing his best to pull off a Mr. Bean impression, what do you think… did he nail it??
After the beach, we decided to take the ferry over the river to an area called South Shields, their river fronts here are pretty developed. This used to be a very busy port for coal and textile industry. Not so much anymore, the unemployment in this whole area around and including Newcastle is very high. Bad for me since I’m trying to find work:( but hopefully something turns up yet! (Bad for everyone I suppose)
Yesterday, we took a trip to Durham County, it took about a half hour to get there by bus from the metro station. When we got there at 10:00 we found out that tours only happen in the afternoon so we had to figure out our own stuff to do. We explored the Durham Cathedral for about an hour or so which was pretty awesome. It’s hard to believe that it was founded in 1093 AD!!
Sadly, we weren’t allowed to use cameras inside:(
I can always hear the echo of horses hoofs on these narrow cobbled streets…. if that makes me weird I’m ok with it!
As a result of Rod’s love for exploring
intriguing creepy, narrow stairwells, we discovered a pretty awesome treat! The path led us down past a pub and right up to this riverfront where we found a place that rents out rowboats!
For 5 pounds a piece we took a boat out for an hour, the guys did all the work of course!
We just sat back and enjoyed the ride… and the splashing:)
Somebody had to keep the dog warm!
This is the front of the Cathedral, those windows are all stained glass, gorgeous from the inside..
And, on our way home we passed this statue called The Angel of the North. Apparently it’s famous?
That’s it for now, hope you enjoyed! If you have any questions or comments, please post them below:) ….. I think I’m going to go make myself some cookies!
